Modern 20mm Display Cartridge - Polished

W / Authentic Blue PGU-30A/B TP-T

There are only few weapons which have been built that fire projectiles between 12.7mm and 20 mm caliber.  Since 20mm is the cutoff point where most nations switch from bullets to shells, it has come to also generally be the cutoff point between weapons classified as a machine gun or a cannon. 20mm caliber cartridges have an outside bullet diameter and inside barrel diameter of 0.787 inches (20.0 mm). Projectiles or bullets are typically 75 to 127 mm (3–5 in) long. Cartridge cases are typically 75 to 152 mm (3–6 in) long. Many but not all 20 mm rounds have an explosive filling and detonating fuse.

Like most cannon ammunition, 20mm caliber weapons are typically used against large targets such as vehicles, buildings, or aircraft. Though lethal against individual soldiers, 20mm ammunition is so large and heavy that its effects are inefficient against relatively small targets.

The F-16’s and F-18’s use the M61 Vulcan gun to fire these rounds. The M61 Vulcan is a hydraulically or pneumatically driven, six-barrel, air-cooled, electrically fired Gatling-style rotary cannon which fires 20 mm rounds at an extremely high rate (typically 6,000 rounds per minute). The M61 and its derivatives have been the principal cannon armament of United States military fixed-wing aircraft for fifty years.  The M61 was originally produced by General Electric. After several mergers and acquisitions, it is currently produced by General Dynamics.

Phalanx CIWS Close In Weapons System • Live Fire

These “war relics” were fired from F-16’s and/or F-18’s.  The cartridges are original brass cases with either new old stock, un-fired projectiles or previously fired projectiles retrieved from a bombing range.  They have been reassembled for display purposes only.

THIS IS AN INERT PROJECTILE AND CARTRIDGE! The original bullet was fired and this authentic case was gathered from the firing range. The projectile is new old stock or was cleaned up, and added back into it for display.

Each display cartridge measures 6 3/4 inches in length and 1 1/8 inch in diameter, 7.6 ounces in weight.  This cartridge will also come with a small history info sheet, describing the item along with the gun.
